A probe bet is a bet made by the out-of-position player on the turn or river after the preflop aggressor checks back the flop, opting not to continuation bet. This action aims to test the aggressor’s hand strength and potentially take control of the pot. It differs from a donk bet (leading on the flop) or a delayed continuation bet (aggressor betting the turn after checking the flop).
